UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BROWN DIAMONDS

Everybody has heard of brown diamonds. We all know that they are very common and that they are used for industrial purposes. But, did you know that all brown diamonds are not equals? The value of the brown diamonds change depending on various factors. So, before you go out to buy diamond jewelry, make sure that you have done your research so that you can make an informed decision.

Brown diamonds occur in various states like natural brown diamonds, synthetic brown diamonds, Le Vian Chocolate Diamonds®, and irradiated brown diamonds. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Natural Brown Diamonds

These occur naturally in mines around the globe. According to geologists, they are formed because of very high pressure deep inside the earth. The same pressure that makes natural brown diamonds is also responsible for pink diamonds. It is believed to be more than the pressure that forms white diamonds. This pressure also causes the inclusions that we find in diamonds. The grading of inclusions is called that diamond’s ‘clarity’. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has standards of calculating the inclusion of diamonds based on different factors. The clarity of a diamond plays a more important role in white diamonds as compared to the colored diamonds.

Synthetic Brown Diamonds

As the name suggests, the synthetic brown diamonds are made in a lab. They are not natural. The prices of all naturally occurring diamonds are increasing with each passing year but the value of synthetic diamonds are decreasing and the prediction is that they will continue to decrease as the technology that is used to make these diamonds is advancing and the process is becoming more and more cheaper.

Irradiated Brown Diamonds

These are naturally occurring diamonds that have color in them. They are made by using the low quality natural brown diamonds that are not used in any type of jewelry. Their color is enhanced and their clarity is improved by putting them under the process of Irradiation. This way, these low quality diamonds become a little more acceptable in the eyes. Their use in the industry is strictly regulated by the government of USA. People who want to deal or trade in irradiated diamonds must get certified by a Nuclear Regulatory Commission certified lab. Once they have the certification from the lab that the diamond that they are selling or trading is safe, they can go on with their business.

Le Vian Chocolate Diamonds®

The term ‘Chocolate Diamonds®” is a brand of the Le Vian company in many countries which include the US and the UK. These brown diamonds are found in the Argyle mine in Australia and they are different from other naturally occurring brown diamonds like the cognac diamond or the champagne diamond. The Le Vian company is the only one that is allowed to call its diamonds Chocolate Diamond®s. This brand was established in 2000 and they strictly regulate the grade of diamonds that they accept as chocolate. The diamonds must be within C4-C6 range and must be SI or better.

So now that you know about the different occurring brown diamonds, you can go ahead and make an informed decision about your jewelry and what kind of Chocolate Diamond® you want on your ring, bracelet, or necklace. Now even men have the choice of buying jewelry or watches that have Chocolate Diamonds® studded in them.
